Vision of the Future, Melbourne 2014, showcased Massey Ferguson’s range of machinery and technology solutions for grounds care applications right through to modern broad acre farming operations.
With 4,500m2 of exhibition space and over 80 display units, information kiosks and multimedia displays all under one roof, Vision of the Future was a great opportunity for agricultural operators across the APAC region to see the latest in Massey Ferguson products and Fuse technologies before the busy Harvest period.
Running over three days, the event unveiled new Massey Ferguson products as part of a wider global release.
Vision of the Future – Melbourne featured a glimpse of the new generation of Massey Ferguson products now available in Australia and New Zealand, including the New 74-82 HP MF4700 Global Series and Massey Ferguson’s most powerful tractor yet, the new 270-370 HP MF8700 Series.
260 Massey Ferguson dealers from across the region along with over 400 customers were also introduced to the global series concept, unique in the farm machinery industry and a major component of Massey Ferguson’s Vision of the Future.
Massey Ferguson’s parent company, AGCO has already started the Global Series investment in new facilities and systems that will create a highly flexible network of manufacturing plants, enabling major units and complete tractors to be produced and assembled at multiple locations throughout the world to meet the demands of local markets.
“This is an exciting time for Massey Ferguson and our customers as we embark on a new generation of products that offer features and quality that will make them very attractive to Australian and New Zealand farmers and operators,” says Simon Hole, Director of Marketing, AGCO Australia.
Product specialists, parts specialists, dealers and finance representatives were available with the latest information and product knowledge about the exciting Massey Ferguson range and the future of Global Series.
Also featured at the event was the exciting and ongoing development in technology products.
Taking the central stage across the three day event, Fuse technology Product Manager Jeremy Duniam outlined the huge benefits of technologies currently available on Massey Ferguson products and the enormous market potential these products have, as well as their positive impact on the profitability and efficiency of farming worldwide.
“Fuse is a new generational open approach to precision agriculture for Massey Ferguson products. Fuse connects the entire crop cycle from enterprise planning to planting, crop care, and harvesting and grain storage. For Massey Ferguson customers it means access to seamless advance technology and data management that can be integrated into their current operations and service providers with immediate benefits and improvements in efficiencies into the future. It is an exciting time for advanced technologies”, Jeremy said.
Dealers and customers also got the opportunity to be amongst the first people in the world to test drive the new MF4700 Global Series, with several MF4708 models available at an off site testing location.
The Vision of the Future event was a huge success and the Massey Ferguson team at AGCO Australia thanks all APAC attendees, many of whom travelling from around Asia Pacific, New Zealand and regional Australia, for their positive participation in the event.
While the skies above may look ominous in this picture, the tractors and equipment were in for a day of hard work ahead. Several weeks ago in American Falls, Idaho, AGCO dealer Agri-Service, LLC had its first of a series of events called Fall Tillage days. This is a chance for their customers and prospects get behind the wheel of our tractors and demonstrate them along with our tillage equipment. “In attendance at this particular event were approximately 18 guests representing about 8 local farm operations,” said Adam Hubbard, Marketing Manager at Agri-Service.
Available to demo were a Challenger MT685 pulling a Sunflower 4511 Disc Chisel, a Challenger MT765 pulling a Sunflower 1436 Disc Harrow, and a Challenger MT865 pulling a Sunflower 4630 Disc Ripper. Everyone in attendance was able to demonstrate each of these machines and Agri-Service salesmen as well as AGCO Product Specialists were on-hand to answer questions and point out key features of the equipment and highlight their benefits. All were able to easily demonstrate the ability to till under the crop residue while leaving an impressive finish.
As these machines were parked on a well-traveled road prior to the start of the day, there were some walk-ups inquiring about the impressive display including the static Gleaner Super Series S88 which was prominently showcased as well.
“We had positive feedback from all of the customers that attended. All were able to operate the equipment and were impressed by the tractors as well as the performance of each tillage piece. Some of them had used Sunflower [before] and some hadn’t,” stated Hubbard. When asked if anything in particular stood out to the guests, Hubbard replied, “the SF 4630, the big disc ripper and it performed very well in addition to the incredible ability and performance of the MT865 tractor.”

Most days, from 5 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., you can find Galen Hammann working what might be called his first shift. He’s an assistant engineer at the Truman Hotel in his hometown of Jefferson City, Mo.
By mid-afternoon, he’s working closer to home on his 185-acre farm, where he raises about 80 head of cattle a year, as well as oats, wheat and hay—a mixture of fescue, orchardgrass, brome and clover—to use as feed for his cow/calf operation. No matter what he’s up to, the work usually doesn’t stop until dark, if not later.
That’s much the same story for Ken Thalman. Living and working about a three-hour drive east from Hammann, Thalman is a full-time postal employee in Centralia, Ill., who, in addition to his day job, grows grass hay on 18 acres of his 40-acre spread.
Thalman and Hammann are among the growing ranks of the do-it-yourself hay producers. One of the main drivers of the trend is that less hay is being produced, leading to higher prices.
Also, significant advances in equipment have made it more cost-effective for many farmers to grow their own as opposed to buying feed or hiring custom harvesters. Even growing hay on plots of land once considered too small to be worth the effort has become an increasingly popular solution for producers looking to squeeze the value out of every dollar, hour and acre.
To be sure, the rising cost of hay and the demand on custom harvesters have made the DIY option more cost-effective for greater numbers of small-acreage farmers. In addition, not only can they now grow hay themselves, small-acreage producers can also grow the quality their operations demand.
Both Hammann and Thalman battle hills and sharp corners that make operating with large mowers and balers difficult. That’s a big reason why they use small, nimble equipment that’s more suited for rolling land often carved into small parcels.
“The smaller length of the cutterbar on Ken’s Massey Ferguson® 1326 disc mower allows it to cover rough terrain,” says dealer Jeff Suchomski, of Suchomski Equipment. “And Ken’s Hesston® 1734 [round] baler, with the smaller overall size, can handle the terrain better too.”
Thalman can also pull his new equipment with relatively low-horsepower tractors. Considering many small-acreage farmers aren’t likely to own anything much larger, that’s a valuable feature.
“I don’t need a big tractor [for] farming,” says Thalman. “I’ve got my own tractor, and Jeff can match me up with equipment that will work with what I’ve got. It’s a win-win situation.”
Both Thalman and Hammann also have to travel over the road with their equipment to reach smaller patches of land they clear for neighbors. When he needs to be mobile, Hammann runs a Hesston 4550 square baler he purchased from Tom Lauf, of Lauf Equipment. “The square baler is built very compact compared to how it used to be built. It’s narrower and still makes a better bale than the old balers did,” Lauf says.
Thalman also likes the way his equipment handles in tight spots. “When I show you some of the places that I take hay off of, you’d think there’s no way you could get your equipment in,” he says. “I’ve got places up and down the road here with 4, 5 and 6 acres that I mow. And my equipment is small enough, I can just run right down the road.”
